Centre for Prison Pastoral Studies
Go to: Necessity / international / two chairs / organisation
The Centre for Prison Pastoral Studies (CPPS) is an ecumenical initiative started by the Faculties of Law and Catholic Theology at the Tilburg University and the Protestant Theological University (Kampen) in close collaboration with the Catholic and Protestant prison chaplaincies in the Netherlands. The CPPS was officially opened by the Dutch Minister of Justice on September 24th, 2009. The opening was part of the festivities of 60 years prison chaplaincy facilitated by the Ministry of Justice.
Necessity
The reasons to start a Centre in this specific pastoral field are the need for:
- practical and field-relevant research,
- stimulation of education and expertise on prison pastoral care via formation and training,
- services, such as advicing on current issues like interreligious cooperation, denominational identity, church-state questions.
International
Worldwide there was no academic centre which exclusively focuses on research and education concerning the context, quality, methods and content of prison pastoral care. The CPSS wants to fill this gap. This is also the reason the Centre wants to operate internationally by linking research and researchers. The Centre wants to support individual researchers, to develop relevant projects, to collect expertise, and to share its results with prison chaplains worldwide.
This is why the support of the International Catholic Commission of Prison Pastoral Care (ICCPPC) and the ecumenical International Prison Chaplains Association (IPCA) is very gratifying.
Two Chairs
To stimulate and guarantee the ecumenical research and approach the Centre has a Catholic and Protestant Chair.
The Roman Catholic Chair is financed by the commission PiN (Conference of the Religious Congregations), the SKANfoundation, and the Paul de Gruyter Foundation. Prof. dr. T.W.A. (Theo) de Wit is professor on the Catholic Chair and prof. dr. E.R. (Evert) Jonker on the Protestant Chair.
Organisation
A Board of Advisory, consisting of experienced academics and prison chaplains, supports the staff.
The daily work is in the hands of the Director (Prof. dr. T.W.A. de Wit) and the Secretary of de Centre (mr. drs. A.A.T.van Eijk) See also: medewerkers (staff) en contact.
